Windows 7: Convert streaming stereo to 5.1?

Is there a way to convert streaming stereo audio, such as internet radio, to 5.1 surround? I have a 5.1 setup, but streaming audio comes through 2.1. I don't want to record and convert, just convert in real-time. TIA

Well, 5.1 is a mixer issue. Was the music originally mixed for 5.1? If not, then trying to convert to 5.1 would be rather ugly. That's why you have to buy the correct version of an audio disc if you're an audiophile with a 5.1 system, or like my uncle, 10.1.

Internet radio is streaming stereo. I have a 5.1 setup and if possible it would be nice to hear the music coming from the extra speakers. This would be simulated surround which is not uncommon, but I don't know how/if I can make it happen on my PC.

Do you have a 5.1 soundcard?

Here's a try, go to your music settings and try matrix mode, that should simulate 5.1 output.

As I don't have your audio device (or 5.1 at all, until sometime next week), I don't know where the setting is. It's somewhere in your audio control panel. If you can't find "Matrix Mode" per say, it may be there under some other name. Just try them all.

Thanks! Unfortunately my sound card doesn't appear to offer this option, but I hope to be switching soon. I've got a Gigabyte mobo and just need a surround cable so I can use the Realtek sound.
