I use an HP dv7 model laptop and when I turn the volume up or down, a little audio meter pops up to show me the current sound level. My problem is, when gaming it will minimize the game and often times crash it.
Does anyone know of a way to disable it from popping up?

HP's software - look for a control panel to disable the option, or uninstall the utility.
I still can't seem to find out how to do this...

A down and dirty method.
Right click on the task bar, select "Start Task Manager".
Go to the Processes tab.
Look for any HP related processes, you will probably find more than one... pick the most likely, unless an obvious choice is apparent you may have to go one at a time. Choose one and select the "End Process" button. Check after each process you stop and see if the volume pop-up is gone.
The problem is... it could be under a different name as part of the audio device software.
As Frostmourne posted... there may be an HP or audio configuration utility lurking around.
If you do find process that's causing the pop-up, there's a couple of methods to prevent it form loading at statup.

p.s. If you deselect the "Show Processes From All Users" checkbox there might be more HP background processes visible.
Audiodg is part of the Windows 7 audio and effects processing engine for Windows 7, I don't think audio/sound will work without it.
Perhaps that's why you no longer see the pop-up!
So, that's probably not going to be a permanent fix as it should reappear when you start to play audio.
