I recently installed Windows 7 64-bit in order to get the advantages of DX10 but I am having problems with sound. I am using the onboard sound from my Asus M2N68 motherboard and installed the drivers
from the Asus website (the sound chipset being the Via VT1708B model, I believe). Neither mic port (front or back) works at all (they are recognized but described as unplugged even when plugged in). If I play a test sound, nothing comes out of the speakers (even though the green bars in the mixer indicate the presence of sound and they are reported as plugged in). The headset test sound works through the front port and I can hear the sound through my headphones at first. However, only the front audio port works (not the mic, as I said).
This problem gets worse if I restart the computer then the headset disappears as an audio device at all, leaving only the speakers (which report as working, but generate no sounds) and Digitial Audio/HDMI, which naturally plays no sound as I haven't set that up. The only way to get the headphones in the front port to work again is to uninstall and reinstall the device without restarting when it asks. Even then, only the front audio port works.
All the ports work correctly when using another OS, it's only Windows 7 that has this problem. The hardware is all okay and I definitely have the correct drivers. I even tried both earlier versions of the driver
and VIA's own drivers to make sure.
