I have an X-fi sound card, and i contacted customer support about the problem. This is what they said.

"I was making a research about the issue you mentioned, and found that "What u
hear" was an application that Windows xp users had, but Microsoft decided to
remove it from Windows 7. I could not find the cause of this, but that is why
you are not able to find it now that you have upgraded the operating system."

So they removed it from Windows 7. =C

Well, not really, it depends on the sound card and driver. The built-in Realtek audio on my motherboard, using the latest drivers has a "Stereo Mix" record option, this is equivalent to "What U Hear". if I select "Stereo Mix" as a recording device I can record anything the audio system can play.

Likewise, for the M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 I also have installed. It has a built in Record/Mix option and can record it's stereo output.

I just thought I would update you on my 'progress'. After a lot of messing about, changing settings and whatnot, I gave up on trying to get the What U Hear function working. Either Creative messed up, or Microsoft did - either way, it wasn't going to work.

I ended up buying a 2x male to 1x female connector, plugging my speakers into the female end, and the 2 male ends into the line in and line out sockets on my sound card. Then, using Camtasia, I set the input to Line In, and it works fine. I can keep my speakers turned off if I don't want to listen to what I am recording, and it will still record the sound. The only time it won't record sound is if I mute the speakers through Windows.

I already had a basic cheap USB soundcard, for use with teamspeak/ventrilo (so I can have everyone's voices coming through my headset, and the game's sound through the speakers), and this can still be used as a headset/mic, so it doesn't matter that my sound card's line out socket is taken up.

This is the lead I bought. I didn't need a lead, but I couldn't find any 2x male 1x female short connectors out there (plenty of 2x female 1x male though, weird).

Hello. I am hoping I can get some help with using the "What U Hear" option on my sound card.

I have no idea how "What U Hear" works, as I only found out about it recently. do I have to plug anything into my sound card to get it to work? All I have plugged in is my 2.1 speakers in the green line-out socket.

"What you Hear" must be set as the default RECORDING device. If it's not the default recording device you will get nothing.

I really think it's a function of the drivers and not something Microsoft removed. Realtek is the most ubiquitous motherboard audio chip available and if Microsoft had removed it many thousands of users would have noticed it.

Select the Microsoft speaker icon in the system tray and right click on it, select "Recording Devices". next, right click anywhere in the center of the Recording Devices Window and select both, "Show Disabled Devices" And "Show Disconnected Devices", see if "What U Hear" or "Stereo Mix" shows up.

i recently couldn't see my realtec hd stereo mix when i wanted to capture something off the internet so after much fannying around i got the solution.
Right click on speaker symbol on taskbar click recording devices then on the sound window that opens right click on an item that says not plugged in select show disabled devices then you should see the realtek stereo mix and select. you should be able to set as default . done ,hope this helps

    Download Creative Wave Studio 7.

you can select what you hear as the recording device, and it does work.

it doesn't seem to when set as the default recording device for some reason.
