Sounds cut short

My Windows 7 (and also XP on a dual-boot) logon sound should play as 'Welcome to my castle, stay for a spell!' This works fine when in 'XP'. However, when it plays in '7' it seems I barely hear the entire 'Welcome' and it drops the rest. Have noted that in the Media folder most of the sounds indicate a length of 00:00:00. One of the longer ones is 'Flush' at :05. Believe either a Windows log on or off is the longest at 00:00:12. These all seem to play O.K. under 'XP' and due to the shortness of many they seem to be O.K. also - but the longer ones get cut short. Any ideas???? Is a 'Creative Sound Blaster X-fi Xtreme Audio card. Have just D/L'd the new driver material and applied same and that did not help. Also note problem with sound viewing videos on-line (like in CNN.com news) - very muffled. No issues with sound on MusicMatchJukebox, Windows Media Player, etc. Seems to be limited to internet issue - perhaps the browser? I use Firefox as the primary one but this problem is in IE also. Must be something simple I'm missing I hope?????
