There is a way to do this.
Leave Stereo Mix as your Default recording device.
Have a mic plugged in.
Go to Recording devices, select the Mic with a single left click then select properties. Go to the "Listen" tab and enable 'Listen to this Device".
Under the Levels Tab:
Make sure your Mic levels are high enough.
Let me know if this works on your system.

There may be another way......
-First disable/uncheck "Listen To his Device".
-Make sure the Mic record level is set.
Do you have a "Levels" tab on Playback Devices/Speaker Properties?
If so, go to the Levels tab, bring the Mic level up. This is a direct monitor, it works on my system if I plug a mic into the front pink mic jack.
It also looks like Stereo Mix is still getting record levels.

Still not work.
I can hear my voice from the speaker but the stereo mix still got nothing
I have exactly the same problem, and think this is a Realtek drivers compatibility problem with Windows 7.
On Windows XP I was able to select what audio streaming channels would get into the mix by mute and unmute (on recording options) every audio channel of my sound card, and then selecting Stereo Mix as default recording device. Finally I muted mic on playback options to get out of the echo effect (hearing my own voice through my speakers).
With that configuration I was able to record conference calls. Now this is impossible without the use of third party software that is much more expensive. The other solution am thinking of is purchase one of those USB external sound cards. It's about $5 so it worths trying, but Realtek and Microsoft should work in solving this problem, to be able to take full advantage of Realtek HD quality
