Realtek HD - No Sound

I see many other threads on a similar topic, but none of them seem to exactly describe my problem, and none of them have been solved.

I was using Windows XP until yesterday on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite R25-S3503, about 4 years old). Upgraded to Windows 7 (it was free through university) and suddenly I have no sound.

I've installed the latest Realtek HD driver from the Realtek website (I've installed and uninstalled it multiple times). The audio thinks it's working and has a device. The volume/mute on the front of the laptop changes the volume/mute on the icon. I can "play" audio, but nothing ever comes out of the speakers. Headphones don't work either. All the volumes I can find are maxed and I'm out of ideas.

Well the point of fact here is that Windows 7 has incompatibility with older hardware such as yours which is 4 years old. I would suggest, you install reliability updates from Windows Update as that might resolve issues with older hardware and possibly even drivers for those.

When Windows 7 was installed to my PC, the front panel audio jacks ceased to function and when I plug my headset on the rear audio jack, the sound is a bit distorted and more quiet.

Right click on the Microsoft speaker icon, select playback devices.

Next, right click almost anywhere in the middle of the window that opens and select both "show disabled devices" and "show disconnected devices".

What devices are showing and which device is set as the Default Output?
(Green circle/check mark)

If possible, select speakers and then select the "set default" button.

Always update drivers if something started to not work.
