    Conexant AC-97 Audio

I have Windows 7 beta loaded on my HP Pavilion zd8000 portable, so far everything seems to be fine except the audio.

This computer has a Conexant AC-97 audio chip. The sound is coming out like it is going through a reverb unit set on high. Everything sounds like a bad stutter. Once in a while it will clear up for a few sentances and then back to stutter mode.

I have deleted the driver in device manager to let it re-install but there is no change. I have downloaded the driver for windos vista hopping that may correct the problem but can't figure out how to load it.

    Any ideas?

same problem here with the zd 8000.
i have try all drivers for the conexant cx20468-31 ac-97 .
    still same problem .
mp3 from 3 min plays 6 min stutter and slowmotion.
i think its a configuration in audio setting is wrong.

Here are some updates on the stutter problem. Both solutions were picked up from the Windows 7 Beta Microsoft TechNet Forum.

You can change the speaker settings to 16 bit, 22059 Hz (AM Radio Quality) but you will loose some in the sound. If you have lousy speakers it won't matter.

The best solution is to download the conexant ac97-61410599.exe driver file. Open this file using WinRAR (WinZip won't work). Extract camc6aud.sys and camc6hal.sys. Rename them camcaud.sys and camchal.sys (in short, remove the 6 from the filename. Copy these files to c:\windows\system32\drivers\.

Be sure to reboot the system so the new drivers will load.

I'd been getting so frustrated with this same problem. It even extended to video being choppy along with the audio. I couldn't help but register just to tell you how much I appreciate your fix. It worked flawlessly and the instructions were perfect. Thanks!

I used Win7 on one of my laptops (dv1000) and tried different drivers here and there and managed to somehow get it working on that comp. I then put it on my zd8000 and used the renaming of the files for the audio drivers to work and that worked like a charm.

I have since reformatted my dv1000, with clean install and now i can't get the audio to work even using the above instructions. Anyone else know what to do?

    Hey all,

I've got a pickle similar to these gents. Im running Windows 7 on an Hp Compaq nx9600. I've got a Conextant AC-97 audio card and can't for the life of me find a way to get the audio working with this operating system!
Every driver I've tried has failed, everything I've tried has failed. The drivers do not recognize the device what so ever, and if they do, it says theres been and error in the MEDIA. Or something along those lines.
I've had a 32bit XP running with working audio, now Im running a 64bit Windows 7, the machine being 64bit. Is there anything I can do? Has anyone read anything thats worked? I'm still trying things here and there and I'd really rather not down grad to XP again. Does anyone know if Vista would work?
Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

    Partial solution

I have been trying to fix a HP Pavillion dv1000 for the last two days. The hard drive went out so I ordered a new one. The owner of the computer did not have a Backup/Recovery disk...I loaded Windows 7 on it. Everything seemed to work fin except audio. It would not load. I tried many drivers and finally turned the laptop over and looked on the service tag. It said the dv1000 was actually a dv1660se. I went to HP's site and downloaded the Installer (sp35811.exe). I then right clicked on it and clicked properties(at the bottom of the list). I cliked on the compatibility tab(at the top of the pop up box). I then checked the "Run this program in compatibility mode" box, selected "Windows Vista" and hit OK. I then double clicked the installer and the video was recognized and installed. It now works on external speakers, but not on internal ones.
