Last note of music keeps going after program shut down

Hi everyone. A newbie here and my very first post.

My Windows 7 PC (Dell Studio 1555) developed an odd problem just a few days ago. When I play music or video that has a music soundtrack in it, and if I close the program by hitting the little "x" on the upper-right-hand corner of the program window (versus going the "File-Exit" route), the last note of whatever the music that has been playing keeps on playing. The program, be it WMP or RealPlayer, or YouTube or Hulu or in case cases, a java applet that plays music, is shut down and gone by that time, and the music no longer plays. But the final note, be it C or D or G or whatever, stays on until I intervene. I can shut it up by playing another song, for instance, which I then close by the "File-Exit" routine.

To put it another way, this behavior never happens if I "properly" go the "File-Exit" route.

The sound of the "note" is not fluid, but rather, it is as if vibrating, meaning that the same note sounds as if cycling on and off (Not "G_________" but more like "GGGGGGGGG").

As I mentioned, this problem suddenly started happening a few days ago. No modification of any kind had been made to this PC, at least not knowingly. It is subject to automatic updates of all kinds, however, so invisible updates to any of the software could have happened in the meantime. No hardware mods have been made, though.

Have any of you encountered this? And if so, what may be causing it? Your assistance to this newbie would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.
