    volume controls itself. help please!

okay so this started back when i had windows vista, i thought upgrading to 7 would take care of it, but it carried over to the new operating system. here's the 2 problems i have, and i believe they are tied together or i wouldnt mention the browser one.

problem 1: volume control. at completely random times, the volume controller will just take over and turn itself all the way down or all the way up. any attempt by me to move it it just resets, if i slide the bar to the top it'll slide it back to the bottom, and vice versa. more often than not it turns the sound down. but once in a while it maxes my volume. the only way i can regain control of the sound is to reboot.

problem 2: i only mention this cuz it happens simultaneously with the sound problem so im pretty sure they're related. my browser will act normally until the problem kicks in, then it acts as if someone is hitting the "back button" and holding it down. i cant go forward a page, i cant open a web page, i cant do anything, it stays on my homepage forever. you can see it try to go to a new page but then poof its back on the home page. this makes browsing or using the internet impossible.

to shoot down the obvious answers here's what ive tried or what i know.

*ive installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, screamed at, kicked the drivers for the sound card. ive tried older versions of it, newest versions of it, generic versions of it, none work.
*the browser is not specific to 1 type, it does it in everything, even if you just open up the desktop, click on C: it goes back to desktop. or if you start with C: and click windows it goes back to C:. firefox, flock, netscape, IE, doesnt matter which, once it starts it does it to all of them .
*ive run norton antivirus, kaspersky, and any other antivirus programs i can get my hands on.

im at the end of my rope. this is a high end gaming computer, that i cant enjoy games on without my sounds. gateway says if i send it to them they'll likely just reformat the whole thing and send it back to fix "registry errors".

so yeah. im open to any ideas. im comfortable with editing registries and whatnot if need be so dont be afraid to get detailed.

and PS: not to be mean but dont bother giving me googled answers as ive spent like a hundred hours googling it lol.

    thank you in advance.

    Hi adam

Slim chance I know but do you have a backup from before the problem? And of course you dont want to do a clean install, correct?

hoping to avoid redoing the entire installation. id have to go buy a real copy of windows 7, the copy i have is one of those upgrades you got free with a computer if you bought it between x month and x month.

This may sound pretty funny, but I had a similar situation with "volume randomly turns itself down, wtf?"

Turns out my keyboard's volume control buttons that I never use (had forgotten about) were being pressed by rubbing up against a part of my desk.

Just something to look out for...

I like the keyboard suggestion. It could very well be a bad keyboard. Do you have another keyboard you can connect and try? It doesn't have to be a Gateway keyboard - just a standard USB connected PC keyboard. If not, go buy one of the cheap $6 keyboards just to try - it's worth $6 to see if that is the problem.

Agreed with the keyboard suggestion, I assume the volume down and backspace buttons somehow stuck.

shoulda listed those in my thing as well, when it starts doing the issue with the sound and the scrolling back through webpages i suspected maybe a key on the keyboard was malfunctioning, or the scroll buttons or side buttons on the mouse were doing it. so tried unplugging the keyboard, no effect, unplugged the mouse, no effect, swapped out keyboard and mouse completely, no effect. so im seriously at a loss here. guess ill have to start saving up to buy windows 7 real copy. its crap that those upgrades dont do a clean install. very disappointing.

You can do a clean install with upgrade disk IIRC, browse the Tutorials section of this forum. Btw, try this for last resort: disconnect all network connection, see if the problem persist.

I used to have trouble with my volume like that as well, no matter what I did it'd just go back all the way up. It just started working normally after a while.

okay so i finally gave in, wiped my computer, reformatted it, installed a clean version of windows 7 with all new drivers and updates. it took less than 12 hours for the problem to return, despite not loading anything onto the computer. so now im at a complete loss. what the hell can be causing it? already tried it without the keyboard plugged in and without the mouse plugged in and it still persists.

HELP me plz before i just burn this piece of crap to the ground.

and not sure if it matters but my comps stats:

    gateway gaming supercomputer.
    windows 7 premium 64 bit
nvidia geforce gtx 260 896 mb
    intel core i7 processor 920
    9gb ddr3
    750 gb hdd
