No output device/ no sound video game controller

Please help!!!! I have that horrible problem of" No audio output device installed" and the red x over my sound icon, which means no sound. BUT I also have another problem.

Many say to fix this problem with windows 7 by going to device manager and fixing it under the catagory of sound video and game controller. Problem is, I DONT HAVE THAT OPTION!!!!!

I have no line that says sound video and game controller at all in my device manager. THAT is the major frustrating part.I have no idea where to go now. It seems like an easy fix, but i cant even get started because i dont have the selection available. WTH??

I downloaded realtek hd for 7 already and ran it. No luck. Still red x.

All it tells me is "hardware changes may not have been detected."

Ive updated all new windows updates and went through the recent updates to see if anything could help, something I could to tell to run, but no avail.

All help is appreciated, BUT please take note that i dont have the option of fixing this problem via the sound video and game controller settings in the device manager because, again, i dont have that listing.

    THX!!

Also, i've considered that it may be a virus, seeing that the common option of sound video game controller in not there and the virus may be trying to protect itself by hiding it. But i ran a Malware scan and nothing came up.

Its driver issue. I would suggest you to install sound driver from CD/DVD that has been given to you by your computer dealer.

    JGS, welcome to the forums.

Would help to know what your system specs are. If unsure this should help,

Speccy - System Information - Free Download

As for not seeing anything under "Sound, video and game controllers" that is normal when there is no driver for the sound card installed. When that happens it will usually be found under "Unknown devices" and usually listed as "unknown multimedia device".

Another reason for the driver to not install is if the chipset driver is missing or incomplete. If that isn't there then none or most of the other devices on or attached to the motherboard won't function properly if at all.

    Laptop?

Unfortunately Speccy didn't show the model number. Any chance the label/sticker with that on it is still legible?

There anything else after the CQ60? Reason for asking is that is basically the base model number, with the model number for the specific laptop looking something like this,

    Presario CQ60-419WM

which would help finding what other drivers may be missing for your laptop. One thing I didn't manage to find using the bit of info that Speccy provided is it looks like yours has the "Conexant High-Definition SmartAudio" on it. No promises but the audio driver here,

Software & Driver Downloads Compaq Presario CQ60-419WM Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

should work with yours as well.

I downloaded the smart audio driver from hp on that linked you posted, but it didn,t work. It said 'Driver installation failed.Could not find the device for this driver.'

    Any other suggestions?

That helps, they do have a 64 bit Windows 7 driver for yours here,

Software & Driver Downloads Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (Canada - English)

6 months newer and nearly 3x the size of the other one. Hopefully it will work.

No dice on the new driver. went ahead and copied all my files to a couple of cd and did a full restore to my computer at a friends house, but no change.
He said it's probably a hardware issue and should send it back.

I even tried to get help from a HPtech, but no change with his advice.

I just hope that they fix it quick at no cost to me, seeing that I bought this laptop about 3 1/2 months ago.

Thx for all your time and effort!!! The universe will repay you!!!
