Setting Up Win7 Sound in Control Panel – Please Help!

Hi, firstly, my setup, then my issue:

    Windows 7 (32 bit)
    Intel Cortez D945GCZ Motherboard
DualCore Intel Pentium D 830, 3000 MHz CPU
    2 GB RAM
    Onboard Sound (SigmaTel STAC9220 A1 @ Intel 82801GB ICH7 - High Definition Audio Controller [A-1])

I installed the AUD_allOS_D20001.0x_PV_IDTGUI_v105_Legacy.exe driver (IDT* 92XX Driver - Installs the integrated audio driver version 20001.0 for Intel® Desktop Boards with IDT* audio) found at the downloadcenter.intel.com website.

If there’s anything else important I’m neglecting to tell you about my setup please let me know.

    ---

My problem is that when I try to record anything in Audacity, or even just with the windows recorder under “Accessories” in the Start Menu (so the problem is not specific to Audacity at all), I get a lot of static in the foreground, with my voice in the background behind the static.

I’ll tell you what I’ve done to try to fix it, and maybe one of you good folks can tell me where I’m going wrong?

In the Windows Control Panel I went to Sound --> Recording tab --> I chose my Default Device: “Front Mic”, it is enabled and it has the little meter beside it that monitors input levels. All is fine there. So I go to record:

I open Audacity or Windows Recorder (Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Windows Recorder) and click on record. The file I end up with is invariably a track of LOUD, screeching static, with a tiny voice in the background. (The voice is mine - thank god for that much!) It is precisely this intense, loud static that is my problem. I have tried this with two microphones (a Shure SM-58 and I'm using it with an adaptor that allows it to be plugged right into the mic input of a PC and also with a regular pc mic), both of which I know work perfectly, but changing the type of mic makes no difference in the outcome.

Why is it there? How to get rid of it? What settings have I neglected to set?

If anyone has the answers to these questions for me, I shall buy them a beer. Please help,

    Mud

We will control the horizontal, we will control the vertical.

So, there's no playback problem with other audio files, movies or online audio?

Have you tried the Mic jack in the back?

What happens if you uninstall that driver and let Windows install a default driver... or is there a default driver for that audio system?

It looks like you're installing a legacy driver for a built-in HD audio chip. Is that the driver Intel recommends for Windows-7? Is there a Win Vista driver available?

Thanks Ap, I'm going to try to answer those questions.

Definitely no problem on playback of anything, music, video, no other audio problems at all.

Yes, I did try the back input. It had the same problem, except everything was lower in volume, the static as well as the vocals. I couldn't get the recording volume close to equal to the front jack, even after adjusting volumes in the IDT HD Sound control panel (that came with the audio driver I downloaded from Intel).

Yes, this is a legacy driver for a built-in HD audio chip. It was actually a Vista driver, but there were no Windows 7 drivers available, so I assumed I should use this one? Is that maybe the cause of all this misfortune? This is what is listed under OS for the driver:

OS:Windows 2000*, Windows Vista 32*, Windows Vista 64*, Windows XP Home Edition*, Windows XP Media Center Edition*, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition*, Windows XP Professional*

    Could that be the issue?

And as for letting Windows install the default driver: a) how do I find out if this audio system has a default driver? and b) how do I make Windows install it?

Thanks Ap, I appreciate all the help I can get,

If a Win-7 driver isn't available Vista drivers are recommended.

If you right click the Microsoft Speaker icon in the task bar do you see Recording Devices, Playback Devices....etc?

Try selecting Playback Devices, then select whatever you have as the default output device, then click the Properties button lower right. Do you have an "Enhancements" tab? if so select and disable all Sound Effects, then backup and go to the advanced tab and make sure output is set at 16-bit 44.1kHz.

Then look at the Recording Devices tab, front Mic/Properties. Try disabling any sound effects, usually it's DC Offset, really shoudn't be a problem, Advanced set at 16-bit, 44.1kHz.

If none of that works we can see if Windows has a default driver.

Might search the forum using Sigma Tel and see if you get any hits with similar problems.

Thanks Ap, you've been real helpful and I appreciate it.

At the same time, no luck. Best suggestions I've gotten on any forum so far, and I did try, I disabled all enhancements on both speakers and mics. I made sure both were set to 16 nbit, 44.1kHz, and they both were. But if they weren't, or if enhancements were actually the problem, that would have been a eureka moment.

    But alas no-reka.

About finding out if Windows has a default driver, how would I go about that? Is there a tutorial anywhere?

And you lost me on the Sigma Tel bit. Aren't they an electronics company?? How do I "use Sigma Tel"?

    Again, I appreciate the help.

Tell me, what would you say the chances are that if I bought a USB adapter instead, that I could bypass this whole miserable affair?

Somehow I feel like the odds here are more powerful than me. I feel like I'm about to lose this battle. I've been strong, stiff upper lip and all that, but I think I'm on the losing side of this campaign....... I'm thinking if a USB adapter won't work, I'll need to buy a laptop to use exclusively for recording, but since I just shelled out $550 for this machine unexpectedly after frying my last one's hard drive (and having other problems with it, so it wasn't worth fixing) and since I'm not made of money (in fact, you could more accurately say I'm made DESPITE no money), I REALLY don't want to face that possibility........

What do you think I should do? I should warn I'm not the suicidal type.

    Thx,
