Recording

All I want to do is use audicity or whatever to get my guitar into a file on my pc. I am using line in as a source as the guitar is hooked directly to that input. It simply won't record. I have the line in as default and inside audicity I also have it selected.

Can it even be done?

Don't be silly. A guitar will never fit into one of those tiny files!

Ok, flippant answer over with. It looks like you need a bit of amplification between the guitar and the line in socket. Have you tried recording off the headphone jack on your amp?

Might also need to adjust the LineIn/Mic Record level.

Each devices has both a playback and record level.

I had M-Audio hooked up and could not record through that either.

I don't think it's a Win-7 problem.

Right click the Microsoft speaker icon in the Taskbar, select Recording Devices, Either Line-In or Stereo Mix must be the default recording Device.

I think Line-In if you're using that or Mic In if you're using that.

Ok back to the Desktop... Left Click the MS Speaker Icon in the task bar then single click on the "Speaker" at the top of the mixer window, then select the Levels tab. The Line-In you see is your recording level, any better? Your guitar should have some kind of preamp if you're going in at line level although you should get a small amount of signal.

I don't know why MS has made the audio system so convoluted, I wish for simple and "Effective" but that's always something that seems to elude them.

Ok, so I went from the front mic to the back mic and I am getting static so I am assuming that should I go through the amp, I will get the guitar sound. I will have to go into town and get a plug.

What is a good medium priced unit that allows one to record different tracks and piece them togeather or is audicity quite capable of those moves.

Are you speaking of a hardware USB or Firewire audio interface that comes with multitrack recording software?

it comes with Cubase4LE a 48track MIDI/Audio recording studio.

There are many products in this price range, even cheaper.

Thanks AP. I'm not sure what I am after as I am new to this. I tried the M-Audio but I could not get it to record and found the whole matter rather complex. If I read the description properly I think that Tascam has the guitar amp built into it. Basically, I would like to lay down a rhythm track, vocals, and some lead guitar. After that, anything else would be a bonus as I wouldn't know how to play them anyway. Well, maybe a little blues harmonica. It's all for fun anyway.
