Windows 7 - Scratchy Audio Files

It's hard to find my problem. But recently a lot of my music files have corrupted! I noticed it right after I installed Windows 7 32 bit that when I play certain songs (even my own!) they have scratches and skips during randoms parts. This isn't on every song but I don't know the reason. I have my music on an external and I even emailed myself the song and also put the ruined song on my blackberry for testing and it's messed up as well...... Help please...

It's not the songs... it's the audio playback, the files are not ruined.

If the files were ruined the scratches and skips would be exactly the same every time you played them.

That said... you need to list your hardware/computer specs so others can help.

Well yeah.. They are exactly at the same intervals every time I play it. I really meant random as in the scratches aren't really consistent, they are just there.. I'm running an M-Audio Audiophile 192 sound card. I installed the latest drivers... And like I put the songs on my phone and my other drives and they are scratched at the same time.. Maybe a virus went on my hard drive? That wouldn't be good...

Sorry, I didn't understand the problem.

The only thing I can think of is a drive going bad... but then I think there would be other errors... or.. If the files were corrupted during a transfer between drives. Do you have any old backups of the songs that you know are good? Maybe stored on Data Cds or DVDs? Something you can check your system out with?

Yeah, I email a lot of my music and I went to my sent emails and compared them and the ones I had sent were pretty much flawless... sigh.

I think it's possible corruption is happening during I/O transfer... specifically USB.

Do you think that's a possibility.

I've heard of it happening before but that was ages ago.

Remove everything USB you have attached (except kybrd & mouse), see if file transfer integrity improves.

Do you have Virus/Malware checking active in the background... it's possible that it's checking all I/O operations in an intrusive manner causing corruption during transfer.

Also, try transferring a few graphic files to the USB drive and see if they become corrupted in any way.

That's the weird part, It's only "some" mp3's. Everything else is golden.. I'm about to check the disk for errors. That's probably the only thing I haven't done yet. I'll do it after I sync more stuff to my other 1TB. And I remember when I first started Windows 7, it asked to check for errors, but I was undecisive as my files are too vulnerable for such a daunting task (even though it's really not), I'm just worrisome... Thanks for the suggestions.
