Windows media player problem

Hi, I have started getting an annoying pause for a split second when playing audio tracks on media Player. ( sounds like a needle jump on vinyl) It only occurs intermittently on every second or third track and only lasts for a very short time. The rest of the sound is unchanged and OK. I have substituted headphones for speakers and it still happens. It doesn't happen when I switch to Media Centre or when I play the same tracks through Nero Showtime. I have had this desktop PC with Windows 7 Home Premiumn installed and set up for 9 months with no problems and this problem only occured 2/3 weeks ago. I get Windows updates automatically and I am wondering if this has caused the problem. Does anyone have any ideas or know of a fix I can try?
Thanks DOOM6G.
