I have previous experience where error code 10s have been fixed by a bios update. Worth checking out.
Is your current bios version displayed when you start the laptop? What is it?

sometimes it helps to chance the pci slot. but can be a driver problem too, because of another previous installed device.

Try this, it might help.

First remove your sound card drivers via Programs and Features in the control panel (if there is such an entry). Let the computer reboot and if it asks after rebooting to install drivers, cancel it!

If after rebooting, it installs some drivers without asking you, then OK, just go to Device manger.

In device manager, right click your sound card and click on uninstall AND check the box "Delete the driver software for this device".

After that, just reboot and when Windows asks you for your drivers, cancel it and install the very latest Vista sound drivers available for your laptop.

Again, remember that it has to be Vista drivers and as latest as you can get!

As per your post, you said that you have an AC97 on board sound chip. I found the latest official Vista drivers for them from Realtek here:

Realtek

But, these drivers are generic; meaning that if HP's drivers give you some special functionality, chances are that these drivers won't give you that functionality. Hence, I urge you to first check with HP's suport if they have latest Vista drivers for your laptop available and use those first!

If they don't work, you may try Realtek's drivers.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your time!

Dragor an update to your post.

I deleted via program features, restart, under device manager after right click there was no option to delete the drivers along with it,I deleted anyway, and on reboot a small box poped up for about 1/2 seconds saying in was installing drivers it promptly went away and said failed because it could not detect the media device. I have tried with both realtek drivers(which install fine but do not work) and hp's drivers which will not install as it dose not find my sound card.

More info is that this is 32 bit windows 7 and that under device manager/sound and game controllers there is only "High Definition Audio Device" where I think it should say conexant audio blah blah blah

lol!

Then I gave you the wrong driver to install since you use Connexant and not Realtek!

Anyways, glad you could get it solved on your own!

Congrats and bravo!
