Optical Audio recording issue

So i have stereo mix in my recording devices and it works properly when i select my desktop speakers as an output, but as soon as i change my playback device to my optical outpput, it stops monitoring any type of playback in windows. Is there any type of fix for this? All I want to do is have my optical sound monitored by stereo mix so that my visualization program R4 can find an audio source, and sync playback with.

Oh yea, the program works fine when using desktop speakers, since it can monitor the stereo mix. So I know the program works at least.

Thanks in advance.

Doubtful because "Stereo Mix" is part of the analog circuit. The A/D converters are probably past the point that Stereo Mix intersects.
