Windows 7: Headphones and speakers play at the same time

Headphones and speakers play at the same time

So, my problem is that both the speakers and the headphones play in my HP laptop at the same time.

When I go into my playback devices I have three options:

1. ATI HDMI Output
2. Speakers and headphones (same device)
3. headphones

When my headphones are connected the third still shows them as unconnected but sound will play through both the speakers and the headphones.

I am wondering if there's any way that I can fix this so that I can have sound play out of just one or the other.

I have tried the following things:

-system restore
-updating my sound drivers

Thanks for any future help.

With no system specs specified we can't say exactly. But, in newer HD audio sound systems they autodetect when something is plugged in. If you have one of these devices it is either the driver or there is a hardware problem with the sound chip.

There is a section in the forum to enter you system specs. But, it appears you have RealTek audio chip. This is the auto sensing type.

1. Check HP for any updated drivers (other than what you have installed) or check RealTek to see if they have an updated driver for your model.

2. If drivers do not help, uninstall the RealTek in the Device Manager, then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound.

If neither helps it would appear it's a hardware problem in the sound chip. If it's still in warranty contact HP for warranty service. If it's not in warranty you will just have to deal with the inconvienence as the motherboard will have to be replaced to fix the sound module problem.
