Avira Antivir Personal Edition (Free). I never even notice it's there.
Good detection rates are something I couldn't say about. I have no idea what problem you have with the interface, it is intuitive when you even have to look at it (which is rare).

Bonus random story (I'm bored)... when I was working as a lowly tech at an independent computer/copier repair place in '97-98, we got a system with a virus on it. Tried every scanner out at the time - including the pricey ones, and they couldn't detect ****. Even fprot failed. I found this random, discontinued program from '93, and it magically detected and cleared the virus. The virus was so old that nothing else even looked for it. What was the discontinued program? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Gigabyte OS Windows 7 Ultimate CPU Intel Core(TM)2 Quad- Q9550, 2.83GHz Motherboard G31M-ES2L Memory 4GB Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD4600 Sound Card On Board: Monitor(s) Displays Acer AL2223W, Acer AL1916 Screen Resolution 1680 x 1050, 1280 x 1024 Keyboard Microsoft Laser 6000 Mouse Logitech Optical Trackman PSU 600W Case Cooler Master Hard Drives 160GB

After a lot of trying and researching i found that under win 7 on my two machines (x86 and 64) the best protection with least resource usage is
Avast Home (all set on high)
Prevx (with real time protection and high heuristics, 0 conflict with avast)
and Hitman Pro (on demand, cloud scanning with multiple engines).
Cisco hardware firewall, Vista Firewall Control Pro (the version which should be paid is running for more then a month now for free with no pop-ups, go figure)
Web of Trust addon for IE8 with custom security zone, NoScript Firefox, and AVG Linkscanner.
Remote control is turned off and so is unnecessary network sharing and some other services, DEP is turned on for all.
With all that my resource usage is so small it's not even noticable. System is secure and passes all tests with flying colors. I haven't had a single problem with Windows 7 on two different machines since I switched 2 months ago.
I'm a happy surfer | My System Specs | | |

I looked into hitman pro, seems like a really good app. From what I read, it seems it will stop removing malware after 30 days, unless you opt to pay for it. is that the case in your situation? I also checked out Prevx, I like that it can work in harmony with other anti virus programs. How are you using it? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Gigabyte OS Windows 7 Ultimate CPU Intel Core(TM)2 Quad- Q9550, 2.83GHz Motherboard G31M-ES2L Memory 4GB Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD4600 Sound Card On Board: Monitor(s) Displays Acer AL2223W, Acer AL1916 Screen Resolution 1680 x 1050, 1280 x 1024 Keyboard Microsoft Laser 6000 Mouse Logitech Optical Trackman PSU 600W Case Cooler Master Hard Drives 160GB
