Microsoft Security Essentials: Free, So What's the Catch?

The program provides real-time protection against spyware, viruses, worms, Trojans, and other malicious software -- and stacks up well to its paid competitors.

So the jist of the story is that the product is fairly decent and does a good job and there really isn't a catch.

It does work pretty hard at reducing the functionality of open source and unsigned applications not officially or unofficially approved by Microsoft, whether they're safe or not.. for example, it attacks malwarebytes if you have the full retail version with the protection module and website blocker enabled.. and it's completely ineffective against fake AV scareware

hmm so what AV offers the best security? :) its kind of hard for a regular user to tell which review is reputable and they sometimes give conflicting answers, can anyone point to a trustworthy site that does a decent comparison of the current AVs on the market?
