There is a reason I'm still running Office 2K3 and Photoshop CS3 lol.

All in all, this is some troubling news.

I just thought of this scenario. A person want a free registry cleaner that isn't free using a torrent through a botnet. Now is that a computer bomb just waiting to go boom.
i think that i dont understand... that program clean's a registry?
Basically, Layback is presenting a scenario where you are trying to get a 'free' registry cleaner from a questionable source, in this case, a bit torrent bot net...

The 'free' part implying it is hacked or cracked. Which, in itself, is still questionable and is often just a way to put yourself at risk at some point in time as it might have a time delayed code to mess with your system.

Time delayed viruses are the hardest to pin down because most people don't know they are infected until it goes off. Most viruses tend to propagate, trying to infect as many computers as it can, which sets off alarms. Time delayed ones are less noticeable unless someone trips over it by accident and triggers it or notices something 'out of the ordinary'... But most people who try to get the 'free' software, often times don't notice it until it is too late.
i see thanks for the explanation!

Far as I'm concerned, people who abuse torrents by using them to download hacked software deserve whatever happens to their computer.

Yes my post might be a little hard to understand. Many things downloaded from these kinds of sites due damage and the owner of the computer don't even know it.( Botnet). This might help.

My understanding is that infected computer can be spreading the infection to friends, family and work place computers without knowing it.

Well, most of it is also the fact that people are cheap and uneducated with regards to how others target people.

The Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 commercial made an interesting point on how people were giving away information for a fake bank, because people aren't educated enough to understand that some of these things are literal scams.

People want the free stuff, not realizing that free always comes with a hitch. Free iPod, free iPad, free iPhone, free X-box... All of them are baits for the people who don't stop for a moment and think about it. The problem is, as we get to newer generations, the 'smarter' people are replaced by the 'mindless' hordes following them.

A colleague of mine stated, in 20 years, he fears what IT will become, because more and more people are 'users' than they are techs. Where they don't bother learning about the stuff, they only care about using it. And the computer is going that way because of the simple fact, it is less about caring how it works, only that it works.

Luckily at my school, there is no shortage of CS and EE majors.

Being a CS or EE major doesn't necessarily make you a good IT person.

True, but out of the ~ 1500+ there is bound to be a few good ones.

Common sense and a talent for diagnosis will always make for a better IT person than any degree alone.. in fact the degree itself means almost nothing except for proof of a good memory, math skills, & the ability to follow instructions.

I have actually seen a City College hire a person with a Masters degree to teach a course in Assembly, who literally failed in being capable of doing that, while a man who is hired as a tutor, with no degree, was able to explain things a hell of a lot better than the person they hired.

Course, the person who had the masters degree got let go, and a mad scramble to grab the previous teacher to handle the class for that one semester happened...
