Tor / Vidalia – How secure is this set up?

Hi all, I was considering using the above but I’ve heard strange tales about the system. One, of how Tor may be no better than standard SSL & two, wait for it, the routers/ servers are operated by the NSA etc...etc. Any enlightened opinions would be more than welcome on the above question!

IMO - Due to the lack of comment, {evidence of reviews, testing, results etc} when searching for information from "reputable" sources, I would avoid it....

    Tor... onion network thing?

I tried that once when I had Win XP, my AV popped up saying that it had received and blocked virus-ed traffic. One article I read after removing Tor and researching it more deeply said that some nodes infect their traffic.
