    Files can't be opened

    Sorry, software newbie here

I've been getting this message for heaps of things recently:

    Files can't be opened-untitled-1.jpg

First noticed it trying to use Trillian's profile editor, now noticed it applies to anything that connects the Internet to one of my programs... but I can still play games and chat... If that makes any sense. For example, Bad company 2 can be played online, but the updater causes this problem. I also get it trying to run programs rather than save them when I download, and uploading anything anywhere just comes up with errors.

I couldn't update Spybot or Malewarebytes but I re-downloaded the latest versions of both and scanned to no avail, a few pieces of minor tracking cookies and the like, which I deleted before restarting, to find the same problem. Registry checkers all say that everything's fine, and messing with security settings in ways suggested in a few places on this forum didn't help. so... plz help, I feel like I've tried everything.

Hello, I use Malwarebytes anti-malware, Spybot search and destroy, Avast! AntiVirus and
    Zonealarm.
Most of the problems I'm having now didn't happen a few months earlier, while I did have those programs running.

What Zone Alarm product are you using? Is it the firewall? The suite? Try to uninstall Zone Alarm.

Try the solutions posted in the links above i.e. creating a new account and see if the problem's gone or not or trying system restore or sfc /scannow or using the last known good configuration option. See the above threads for details.

Ok, Creating a new User seemed to fix everything. can you guys perchance tell me what this means? Not to be ungrateful but it would be helpful to know. Otherwise heaps of thanks, I'll come back here next time I have a problem.
