Windows 7 - Internet Download Manager suspicious activity

Internet Download Manager suspicious activity

I used Internet Download Manager to download a YouTube video. After the video downloaded a window popped up that said I did not have an flv player installed, to play the video. I was then given a chance to install the flv player. After this happened I was redirected to Tonec.com where Norton identified 4 threats. I uninstalled it after this happened.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced any similar problems or suspicious activity when using Internet Download Manager.

Did you uninstall the FLV player? The video may have been the infected culprit here.

I never installed the FLV Player. After I received the pop-up window I was re-directed to Tonec.com where Norton picked up 4 threats. I uninstalled Internet Download Manager s after this happened.

If you try to download a movie clip (especially in formats you already played before) and you get pop up to download this codec or that player first. My suggestion : walk away and look elsewhere. Chances are you only invite trouble.
There are plenty of safe ways of downloading Videos (especially from youtube)

I've read about this, just recently again as a matter of fact.

The message states you need a player to view the content, then redirects you to a site & downloads malware or viruses.

If you have been able to view videos in the past with no problems, there is no reason to have to d/l a "special" player.

Don't click on the link, leave the site immediately.

Are the four threats you type of from Norton Safe Web: Norton Safe Web, from Symantec - report for tonec.com?

The offending file in all four cases is update.exe which 25 vendors at VirusTotal detected. Symantec and Microsoft confirm their detection as a false positive.

You won't see this reflected in Norton Safe Web until Norton re-scans the website and I haven't seen it reflected in NIS2011's definitions yet. Edit: Reflected in NIS2011's definitions.
