Um, not sure how, but i just tried to turn on the windows security through the services again and it has stayed on automatic with no error message. Windows defender then popped up (which also was not working properly previously) and scanned my system successfully finding no threats etc.

So it seems the security center is now working, will have to check again tomorrow.

Also try my backup again tomorrow.

Not sure how this happened but maybe its fixed...

Did you miss an important step along the way to get where you are now?

I guess my threat of a Repair install scared it into working right!

Ok my security center is now fine it seems, but my back up wont complete, stop about 3 quarters of the way through. (external hard drive)

    Any reason why?

What are you backing up? Why are you backing up possibly corrupted files?

Im backing up my Local disc (C:). I just tried formating the external hard drive and backing up from scratch but it still stops half way through and says 'last backup did not complete successfully'

I have searched through loads of solutions to I/O errors and problems with external hard drives stopping in the middle of back up and none of them has worked.

Could it have been the result of windows security not working a few days ago? Maybe one of the suggested solutions to that affected the way the external drive backs up?

Let's see if this will report what's going on ....

    • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
    • Double-click VEW.exe
    • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
      • Application
      • System
    • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
      • Error
      • Information
      • Warning

Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

    Either:
    • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 3 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
      Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
    • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
In the From: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 13 07 2009
In the To: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 13 07 2009
      Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply
