    Bitlocker

    Hello All

ive recently encypted a folder within a external hardrive (/e)with bitlocker im running windows 7 Ultimate ,i had a fiddle and can manage to get into the folder but now vlc or media players cannot play these like previously before im def running it in adminstartor as well as its the only profiles setup up i have 3 recovery passwords but have no clue where to add these to make the files playable again?!
do i have to turn on bitlocker to disable these folders to make them work?then turn off?
or iam just resigned to losing this folder?

    thanks in advance

    Hello Snoopy187,

    Welcome to the forums.

right first off, you shouldn't really use bit locker on an external drive as it can cause issues.

Now, have you tried moving these files to the desktop and play them from there.

Lastly, the recovery passwords are for when your designated chip (Can't remember what its called off hand) or USB stick fails/lost. There would be an option, whilst your booting up where it will ask for the code if the chip/usb stick is not present.

REMEMBER - DO NOT LOSE THEM OR YOU ARE UP S*** CREEK!!!

Post back if the files still work or not whilst on the main drive windows drive

    hello lucky

thanks for the reply ive tried moving the files but it say i dont have privelges so im not too sure wether its bitlocker or a sharing issue (it shouldnt be)
In the security advance settings i cant seem to edit it,ive turned bitlocker off from the 'bitlocker manager' so i dont think i would be able to close that if i wasnt admin
i can only think bitlocker has corrupted my folder as a couple of the videos in the folder do play but the rest that previously do now dont

First, did you use EFS(Encrypting File System) as the picture shows below:

EFS cannot be used for entire drive, but you can apply to the specific folders, files

If you use EFS for the folders and use Bitlocker to Encrypt your drive,
you might need to Decrypt(Or off) your drive first(Using Bitlocker),

then go to the folder, right click>General>Advanced,
Checking the ticks, did you put a tick beside "Encrypt contents to secure data",
Try to untick it,when you press OK,it should pops up the following:

Obviously,it should pops up the windows said Decrypt

If it is done, you should able to open the files again.
If not,you might receive a warning like this:

You need another solution if the picture above occur.

    hello

thanks very much for the reply but ive tryed that on the folders affected but none of them have the tick next to them ,when i try to play them in vlc i get a error in the log saying the vlm cannnot be played ,ive tryed them in windows media player but i get a error with that too
im not sure if its bitlocker now as its turned completly off unless it still effects the folder ive selected , i only have one profile that im logging in with and it says i have admin rights

Do you able to move the file to another drive without Bitlocker at all?
Seems like you can access the files but the files are corrupted

How have you managed to get into bitlocker when it is not part of Windows 7 professional and is only available in Enterprise or Ultimate? Or have you used bitlocker on a different machine to encrypt the drive?
