I think the solution is to run one AV as your primary one(Whatever AV you choose) and run the other one, sitting quietly in the background, on a weekly basis just for a back up check if you need to.

I practice Safe Surfing so I just use one AV with a weekly MBAM scan and Ccleaner. To date no problems!

I'm not sure there was a solution...but rather a general practice of just using 1 AV at a time. It seems this problem occurs if you have Avast and MSE on the machine at the same time.

Edit: Whoops, I see that HW and I just posted more or less the same thing.

Keep an MSE that won't install updates and locks up the PC?

As far as I can tell, MSE works perfectly fine the way it was intended. At least I don't have any problems with it, of any kind, on any of the machines I have it installed on. People who run more than one anti-virus product at the same time deserve whatever hits them. With any understanding at all of how these AV products work it should be obvious that that's asking for trouble, of the worst kind. Enough said.

If I'm not all wrong... about this this is what the Original post was about..
feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :

Just finished reimaging my Win 7 for the second time.

One of the MSE updates in the past week is causing new update installations to hang. They download fine.
After several minutes they would finally finish. They had a 10MB update to the new MSE 2.0 last Tuesday I beleive and it had started acting odd on the update installations since then. Real slow.

Yesterday evening and today the updates hung and locked everything up.
    Nothing would respond.
Yesterday I restarted system and managed to delete MSE and do System Image.
Downloaded fresh MSE from MS worked okay yesterday evening and this morning.

This evening no such luck it locked up every time.
Tried Safe Mode and MSE will not delete through Safe Mode.
"Not able to delete MSE while in Safe Mode" or similar.

Used Win 7 disk to re image. Uninstalled MSE without trying another session of lock the computer up.

Avast was disabled when attempting update today. No help.

SFC /scannow found nothing of course.

Just posting as a heads up if you also have problems.

Running Avast and Win Defender now.

    M'Lady -

I've been following this thread with interest because I've been using MSE since version 1 beta. Haven't had any problems whatsoever. Don't know that there is an answer. Seems like some folks have experienced problems while others haven't. I've checked several other user forums for various anti-malware products (Kaspersky, Norton, AVG, Trend Micro to name a few) and there's a common underlying theme. To paraphrase Abe Lincoln:

You can successfully use some anti-malware products all of the time, and successfully use all anti-malware products some of the time, but you can not successfully use all anti-malware products all of the time.

    Or something like that.
