    Microsoft Security Essentials Update Concern


    MSE's 1 time per day updating is puzzling to me. MSE says it's "up to date", even if there are updates waiting for it to download at the next check. That doesn't make sense to me? If MSE only needs 1 update a day to be "up to date", then why does MS put out 2,3,4 updates per day???

    Why doesn't MS put out 1 update a day, and then MSE could download that update, and it would truly be "up to date" each day. MS feels that multiple daily updates are essential (or they wouldn't produce them), yet they program their AV to work the vast majority of the time, "out of date".

    Something seems wrong here.

    I'd find it annoying if MSE kept saying that it was out of date two-four times a day! A comparison is MBAM (free version), it considers itself to be up to date if it is updated once in every 7 days.

    I suspect most of this has to do with MSE staying fully optional to avoid court cases from competitors.

    Besides, you can always set MSE to check for updates before it goes into scanning.

    I always found this a little strange also so i changed the update schedule in regedit to update every 3 hours. I now get 3 or 4 updates every day without fail or interuption and the peace of mind i know im up to date.And dont have to scan just to get an update!

    Numerous Updates


    I agree with you people about the number of updates. I never scan without checking for updates first.

    I'm not saying MSE should notify the user that it is out of date, it should just check and download invisibly every 90min or so. I know I can schedule a quick scan to force an update, but I (the end user) shouldn't have to be in charge of being 100% protected, 100% of the time, by scheduling scans, or doing registry tweaks ect...

    Until MS gets a handle on this, I'll keep looking elsewhere for security.

    Ummm you don't have to do a thing it already makes sure you have the latest definitions before doing a scan, it also is already setup out of the box to do scheduled scanning. You do not have to do a darn thing.

    It also is not required to have the super latest definitions as long as its not a week old.

    Microsoft already has a handle on it.

Today it was an attempt to update Microsoft Security Essentials. Error code 80070005. Aaaaarrrggghhh
So today, I decided to patch up my Windows XP netbook and came across Microsoft Security Essentials in the Software section. I thought Windows XP End of Support (April 8) was the day that MS would stop providing downloads for MSE, so I wondered if it was just an installer, so I checked the update...
Firewall is not blocking MSE for sure. Internet connection is perfectly fine. Tried googling for some answers but nothing much about MSE. Does anyone have an answer?
If left to its own devices, when does MSE update? I started using MSE recently, and so far, I find myself updating manually. I've installed MSE on a laptop, too, and after 2 days, I updated manually. I didn't find a setting for updating. Did I miss something? And I have Windows Update set to update...
