Micro. Sec. Ess. Causing Crashes? Since installing the new Microsoft Security Essentials beta, I have been getting "program ceased working" crashes. So far, desktop gadgets, Firefox, and WMP have experienced this.
I suspect this is caused by the new security system, but that's only a guess so far. My system also takes 20 - 30 seconds to find the internet on start-up, as compared to 2 - 3 second before installing the beta.
Anybody else seeing these problems since installing the beta A/V? | My System Specs |

Now that you mention it, two of my gadgets would not launch (Well they launched but never appeared on screen) last night after installing it a day or two ago.
BUT that has happened to me before, BUT I have not seen it happen in the last few weeks. If it continues to do so, MSE will be the 10th AV program I've installed unnecessariy found not one single thing wrong and eventually uninstalled when it starts causing problems I never had before. They are frequently as bad as having a virus anyway

stevieray, what Firewall software are you using?
Also type Eventvwr, click on the icon, then look through the folders on the left. See what the event is that's causing the problem crashes. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Bruce ... somewhere in his 40's OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit SP1 CPU Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz, 2400 MHz Motherboard INTEL/D975XBX2 Memory 4 GB Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro Monitor(s) Displays Samsung SyncMaster 914v Screen Resolution 1280 x 1024 Keyboard Standard PS/2 Keyboard Mouse Microsoft PS/2 Mouse PSU Rocketfish 700 W Case G.Skill Gigabyte Chassis Hard Drives 2/500GB each ... Anybody else seeing these problems since installing the beta A/V? Although the recent opening for the real release is closed MS is gonna upgrade the beta version to the real version. RE: the crash you could go into event viewer and see what the errors say. type event event viewer in search launch event viewer and look thru the app tab to see if there are errors
Hope this helps

Since it isn't generating a BSOD, there are no minidumps to check. In the event viewer, there is an error that seems to correspond with the crashes/shutdowns. It is a "CAPI2" error, and it says: Quote: The Cryptographic Services service failed to initialize the Catalog Database. The error was: 1392 (0x570): The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number me / #1 OS windows 7 x64 Home Premium CPU intel q6600 Motherboard gigbyte ga ep45 ud3l Memory g.skill 8gb ddr2 1066 (pc2 8500) Graphics Card evga geforce 9800 gtx 512 mb Screen Resolution 1680 x 1050 PSU raidmax 500w Case smilodon (yes, t'was the pretty blue lites that got me!) The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable ... uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials beta.
