    Data Execution Prevention (DEP)

I may have finally resolved a problem I've had with a program but changing DEP to protect only essential programs and not all programs. I tried it with all programs and inserted the wayward program as an exception but it didn't help. Once I changed it to essentials only, the program is finally working as expected.

What am I at risk for and are there other ways to protect myself? I use a hard router so shouldn't that act as a firewall?

    Thanks,
    Burt

The main concern here would be virus infection, not so much hacking.
Just use a active antivirus to try and offset the difference.
Essentials still covers base system files though.

You may want to take a look at this. Tutorial for EMET
    Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET)

EMET runs DEP with the added software. The nice thing is you can select a particular problem program to run without it but retain protection for everything else.
It is worth a few minutes to take a read of Post #1.

I just got it up and running properly a few days ago.
It isn't difficult and you can ask questions on the thread if you need help as others have done.

I read thru the post and watched the video. It did not convince me that I need this program. Unfortunately, the video was very tedious to watch as it was very sleep inducing. 2 geeks in front of a camera is a deadly mix.
