Encryption woes

I have recently encrypted a folder on my hard drive. I have been using the folder ok for a few days. However today when i go into the encrypted folder the files text is all messed up. So I try and decrypt the folder (right click properties->advanced and decrypt). No good. Athough the folder is no longer green i cant read the files. Any ideas please. I do have another copy of the encrypted folder on a usb drive if that is any use but I havnt tried this yet (mainly becuase I am now abroad).

Thanks in advance.
