As to how the file got around avast in the first place...perhaps it was on the box when Avast was installed and this was the very first full scan.

A common misconception of the term "Malware"

A combination of malicious and software. The term applies to all known malicious software, e.g., viruses, spyware, adware, worms, trojans, rootkits, etc.

And yes, Malwarebytes says on it's site that it deals with viruses also.

But MBAM is not an antivirus software. :)

(Adding to the public confusion, MSE is described as an anti-malware software, but, unlike MBAM, it is an antivirus software. )

    Right.

    Never said that.

I was just responding to the line - malwarebytes scans for malware/spyware type stuff, not viruses.

    Not true.

To explain a little further. The free version of Malwarebytes can only be used for running a system scan, it will not protect the system from infection but will scan, detect and remove all known types of Malware.

The paid for version will protect your system from all types of Malware.

Neither version targets any particular type of Malware.

Not completely false either. Malwarebytes says you need an AV scanner to detect virsuses. They don't make their product to detect viruses directly, but when malware/adware is considered a virus, and it's detected, than it sorta catches it.

You cannot solely rely on MBAM for all of your virus and malware needs. To do so, would be foolish.

That is still incorrect terminology, Malware is a generic term for all kinds of malicious code it is not a particular type of infection. As I explained, Mbam is only for running scans (the free version), the paid for version of Malwarebytes is a full active program for Malware protection.

I know but didn't want others reading into it.

Bringing the thread back on topic -- I hope Bob didn't miss that another name for win32:vitro Virut and, if confirmed, a format/reinstall is recommended.

Let's just say your statement was not entirely accurate then.

    Still being misunderstood there.

    win32:vitro

    W32.Virut
    (Symantec)

    W32.Virut Removal Tool

    W32.Virut Removal Tool | Symantec

    Important:

    • This removal tool must be run in Safe Mode.
    • If you are on a network or have a full-time connection to the Internet, such as a DSL or cable modem, disconnect the computer from the network and Internet. Disable or password-protect file sharing, or set the shared files to Read Only, before reconnecting the computers to the network or to the Internet. Because this worm spreads by using shared folders on networked computers, to ensure that the worm does not reinfect the computer after it has been removed, Symantec suggests sharing with Read Only access or by using password protection.
