Norton Subscription Fees makes no sense.

I just miss the old days when AV's and firewalls hand at least 10 tabs of options and settings under advanced. Now days you install a firewall or AV and you are given if your lucky 10 options you can change.

Yes, as you said, Norton 360 version 6 will probably be released in spring 2012. There will be a beta testing forum at the Norton Community Forum a few months before the release of the final and official version if you're interested in beta-testing version 6 ;-)

i believe that when Maximum PC reviewed AV's in the past few months, they dinged Norton for perhaps being geared towards the enthusiast and having too many buttons, options, toggles, etc. Perhaps this would be ideal for you.

Well, I guess you cannot have your cake and eat it too. Just wanted to say there are configurable and option laiden products out there.

While Norton has earned itself a bad rap years ago, there current gen products and last gen products have been pretty solid. Unfortunately, the bad taste they left in techies mouths years ago hasn't been forgotten.

I was an avid Norton fan when DOS6.22 was the going thing. Symantec bought and ran Norton in to the ground. I mean they hit the wall. I quit using Norton and swore I would never again. Well never say never. After all this time I relented and tried Norton Internet Security 2011. They must have fired all of the programmers and started over. I find it runs smooth, doesn't load my rig down and does the job. A copy of Norton Utilties came with my purchase and it works great. I hate to say it but they have won me back over.

I haven't installed any Norton products on any machine in a few years nor do I intend to.
The last versions I tried were very resource heavy, very popular (comes on many oem machines as a trial) which makes it a top target for virus writers and it can be very difficult to completely un-install

I remember when Partition Magic was very small and a fantastic program. After Norton bought it the size of the program went beyond huge.

I'm running a win 7 Ultimate 32 laptop at the moment with less than 60 processes running and that's the way I like things to be. Nice and lean. :)

I was a fan of NIS2011 until a few months ago : no doubt it has a superb AV engine (as far as I can tell) and its certainly come along way from the 90's, but it is without a doubt resource hungry....especially during boot time. I was able to shave my boot time by more than half by replacing NIS with MSE...and I'll never look back.

For me personally, MSE+MBAM are the ideal setup.

Odd, I cant even tell Norton is running on my machine ...

Except some downloads it double checks on and holds them in limbo untill its sure its safe.
But just a few seconds and it always tells you why.

But as far as booting ... never slowed mine down or at least not enough Ive noticed.

As far as being configurable, you can go into a manual mode and the firewall alone has tons and tons of stuff to tinker with.



I dunno. I like it.
Have it on 3 machine, and none of them have been infected Since Win7 released. So thats good enough for me :)

There are three settings for boot time protection. Aggressive. Normal and off. Aggressive is the default, which is why it is slow, although on my system not very slow.

why is this thread with question about norton fee for renewal becoming a thread norton sux?
where people who did not even tried latest version of norton say how bad it is.
yes windows ME was really bad but does that makes XP and win 2k and now win7 bad too? everyone fails sometimes.
I use MSE and norton (antivirus only, not nis or 360) and norton 2011 works faster than MSE. in everyday use it's hard to notice really. but checking times (boot, scan, etc) and memory usage etc. says norton is faster.

Norton is very easy to uninstall.

The only time you need to use the Norton Removal Tool, is if you have a dirty install of Windows.

Care to suggest an antivirus that uninstalls cleanly? Even Microsoft Security Essentials does not.

I have spikes in my CPU Graph within Norton 360 v5.0 and my Memory graph is roughly the same as your TheOG. I was reading some of the links from Symantec forum that are posted in this thread, and some people only paid $40 (US) for their renewal subscription, if the price was that low now I'd pay immediately. I'm going to do some more digging, I'm also going to look for some alternatives programs incase.
