Windows Firewall - Remote Desktop Connection Problem

    hello all,

i am trying to connect my netbook (windows 7 starter) to my desktop (windows 7 professional) using remote desktop connection, from the road.

i have followed all the instructions here:

Allow Remote Desktop connections from outside your home network

if i turn off windows firewall on my desktop all is well. with windows firewall on, and remote desktop allowed within the firewall, i am unable to connect.

would appreciate any help. thanks in advance!

Go to this post and follow the instructions completely for it to work. Windows 7 Starter can only be connected to, and can not start a connection to another computer. Following the post will allow you to bypass this: Log into multiple RDP sessions and without interrupting user

Since win7 Starter has had known connection problems you might want to try TeamViewer.

    thanks for the replies.

slasher...i am using the windows starter machine to connect to the windows professional machine. everything works fine when i have shut down the firewall on the windows professional machine. for some reason the firewall is not allowing remote desktop connection even though it is an allowed exception.

to be honest i was a little unsure of using the hack. i have windows 7 professional, not home premium. anyway, i wound up configuring windows firewall to open the port # i have chosen (not the default port # windows defines) and all seems fine. i'm not sure why simply allowing remote desktop connection in the exception rules didn't work. i had to create a new incoming rule. not sure this is the best solution, but it is working.

The hack is completely 100% safe, used on all my computers, which run different Windows 7 versions. So, is your problem solved?

yes, problem seems to be solved. i created a new rule in windows firewall allowing incoming tcp connection through the port number i have chosen for rdc. thanks for your help!
