Windows 7: in services.msc - Security Option to grayed Out

Hi guys,

Something is conflicting with my being able to restart Windows Security Center.

I don't run Norton or McCaffe.

I run windows 7232 090610-1900
64 bit
EST NOD32 and OutPost firewall
I have adaware installed.

My Action center flag is in the tray with a little red x on it.



I tried Run/services.msc to restart the service but its grayed out as an option.

How can I learn whats conflicting?

Stupid question but did you try to restart the PC?

Ok was this a clean install? is there anything in either event log (type event log in search) or device manager (devmgmy.msc in search)

WOW you guys are fast!

When I click on the Action Center Icon in the tray I get a popup saying "1 Important message" Turn On Windows Security Center (important).

Clicking that nets a pop up saying : "The Windows Security Center Cannot be Started".

So I tried to manually do so. But the area to enable this is grayed out in the services.msc / The WSCSVC.

It states its disabled.

I already know this! But I cant get to any control as all the options are garyed out.

Whatever has the ability to turn this off will be used as an exploit.

That is indeed a very strange issue

Have you tried in safe mode? Also, the only thing I can think of that would disable that service is 3rd party security software. You might want to uninstall NOD32/OutPost and test the results, then re-install and uninstall the other 1, test results.

When I look at properties of Security Center the LogOn Tab/Option This Account is check with no user name but the password and confirm password fields are populated!

Safe mode is a good idea.

However, if you are an advanced user, since you have a good anti-virus program spyware detector and personal firewall, there is no need for Action Center at all.

You can remove the messages by going to Start > Control panel > Action Center, click the Change User Account Control settings and set it to Never Notify.

I have mine completely hidden, but if I remember correctly, you can right-click on the Action Center icon, look through the list of programs with notifications and click the box at the bottom left to hide all icons and notifications.

Then there should be another link for advanced options and here you can turn off the Action Center icon completely.

Remember, use these settings if you are an advanced user only.

Man I wish I had done that!

After a reboot to safe mode I set security services to manual as it cant be started in SafeMode.

Then upon reboot I have a snow theme with everything white now!

LOL!

I am migrating this partitions important stuff to my 1T in a Rosewell eSata case for a clean reinstall!
