Thats why I dont want to do clean install (Ill reinstall many programs).how about this astsrv.exe any one else have it too ?
ASTSRV.EXE belongs to the software A.S.T Copy Protection or Nalpeiron License Management or Tiffen Dfx v1.0 for Photoshop by Advanced Software Technologies or Nalpeiron Ltd. If you have any of these installed on your machine (either factory installed or something you added) that would explain why you're showing it. If you're not using the associated program you could always uninstall it.

As for registry cleaners, I'd agree with what others have said. Generally speaking, it's best to let Windows 7 take care of the registry. However ...

CCleaner is a reputable free utility with a built in registry cleaner. It's not very aggresive and seems to err on the side of caution. (If it's not sure about a registry entry it does not seem to recommend removal.) It also gives you the opportunity to back up your registry before any cleaning is done so if there are problems you can restore the original registry files.

Thanks Bill for your welcome input.....

From a BSOD {cause} perspective it is best to steer clear of Norton, McAfee & Kaspersky.

baxxter. Good luck & let us know how it all turns out please.

Have you settled on Norton after all your testing? While much improved, I do believe Norton is still a resource hog compared to other AV programs.
I am not sorry to disagree strongly with the people who still think that Norton is heavy on the system. Norton has become very light-footed since it was rewritten from scratch from the 2009 products onwards. My Vista computer has only 2 GB of RAM and is not slowed down one little bit by NIS 2011. In addition, the upcoming NIS 2012 is going to be even more light-footed.

    Quoting from the linked post:

    Performance

Users need to keep their computers running faster – we understand that. If a product doesn't use system resources judiciously and causes the computer to slow down; users may disable certain protection features and get vulnerable to attacks. Performance is of utmost importance for security products. At Norton, performance is always at the heart of the improvements we make to the products and we continue to innovate to achieve better performance. For the 2012 release, we are working in 50+ areas related to performance. To highlight a few high-level areas:

    • Reduction in footprint, resulting in smaller download and install sizes

    • Faster startup and shutdown

    • Enhanced scan time and file copy performance, resulting in faster scans and file access operations, and having very little or no impact in other application launches.

    • Enhanced network throughput, resulting in faster file copies over the network. More and more users are using sophisticated home networks and the changes in 2012 ensures that our security software gets out of their way for things like shared network file servers and other conveniences of today’s digital home
Finally, the Norton Community offers excellent support, with Symantec employees often interacting with the users and especially with the Guru Team over there.

In the end, however, it is up to you, baxxter, which antivirus program you want to finally install on your computer. In the meantime, please get it cleaned up first like the others have advised you.

A vested interest writing a glowing report on "their" Company product...... now how independent a critique is that?

Understandable certainly - believable????? I think not.

    Faster startup and shutdown

    Faster than what????{ Prior versions of Norton perhaps...}

The final choice is up to you...Sorry if that's no big help, but it's ultimately your decision - it depends on which reviews/opinions on which product manage to convince you more ;-)

Trying to figure out which AV product is "the best" depends on what day of the week it is, what phase the moon is in, if the current month has the letter "R" in it, and all kinds of other meaningless stuff.

The best anti-malware product is the one a person will use and keep updated. No product is 100% effective 100% of the time or we'd all be using it.
