Microsoft Security Essentials: Error Code 0x800070002

Every other time I turn on my computer--and, likewise, every single time I turn on Microsoft Security Essentials--I get this error message. I can't find any way to uninstall the program.

I have Avast for the realtime protection but, as far as I know, I had that turned off with MSE, using it only for occasional security scans.

This has been going on for about a week. Any ideas as to what's wrong?
