As referenced above, have done this already. Some control is flagging the internal IE security scan.

Sorry, I misread that. Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker this has been taking care of the Avast issues.

Alright, I'm about to turn in but I'll try that tomorrow morning and report back.

My fix: (Not guaranteeing this will work for the other gentleman)

Completely uninstall AVG using their tool on AVG's utility site, then reinstalling AVG completely, and then running a control panel uninstall. So AVG left some lingering control in the browser it appears before their latest patch in AVG 2012.

    Deevan,

Thanks mate. That was it and I'm guessing they have that remover there for a reason because a simple uninstall didn't work. Caused so much extra work for a week but I guess when its free you can't complain.

Thanks again and to everyone for taking the time to reply.

You're welcome glad Deevan found some help. Most AV really entrench their program into the OS and a simple uninstall leaves crap behind.

I have fixed this issue by doing the following

Since Microsoft has no way available of reinstalling Windows Defender, the solution I found was this:

    • From a working Windows 7 machine, Zip up the "Windows Defender" folder from "C:\Program Files\" to be "Windows-Defender.zip"
    • Also Zip up the "Windows Defender" folder from "C:\Program Files (x86)\" to be "Windows-Defender-x86.zip" (if using 64-bit windows)
    • On the broken Windows 7 machine, open Windows Explorer as administrator, and rename the "Windows Defender" folder in each of the directories to something like "Windows Defender.bak" (do this in both C:\Program Files\ and C:\Program Files (x86))
    • Copy the .zip file(s) you made above on to the broken machine, and unzip them into their appropriate locations:
    • Unzip "Windows-Defender.zip" to "C:\Program Files\"
    • Unzip "Windows-Defender-x86.zip" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\" (if using 64 bit windows)

At this point, visiting the control panel again, revealed a working Windows Defender icon. Also, downloading files through Internet Explorer started working again.

Besides fixing the problem for me, it reveals that Microsoft is not 100% accurate when they say that Security Essentials REPLACES Windows Defender, as it is obvious that Internet Explorer is still trying to use defender to check downloaded files.... The broken/missing Defender created a false result when IE attempted to scan the file, and thus the browser assumes the file is malicious.

Read the above also, and the person who came up with the solution later on reported the Operating System became unstable, etc.

Have not seen anyone knowledgeable on this matter recommend the procedure.

    Periculo tuo!!!

Hi Deevan, I have the same problem.. I've been able to completely remove AVG using their tool, but I'm not able to reinstall it, as every time I try to download it, I get the message " This file contained a virus and was deleted".
    How did you do it?
    Thanks
