I turned on my computer and the action center said that my antivirus software was not on, so i opened mcafee and what i got is the attached image. I then restarted my computer to see if it would change and when i opened mcafee after the restart i still got the same thing as before. any insight would be great.

There are numerous problems on account of McAfee all throughout these forums. Easiest just to uninstall it and use another paid antivirus or you can try MSE, which is actually really good, if not way better than MucAfee, as someone put it.

EDIT: by the way, that someone was Gregrocker

Microsoft Security Essentials is free.
Thats the best part! ;)
Nuke the cAfee, the party's on :dinesh:

This link will further help you understand MSE, if you would like. Its absolutely *FREE
(*apparently genuine windows installation is required, but no biggie :D)

Have you tried reinstalling mcafee. Usually a simple clean reinstall of AV solve this kind of problem. I agree with other that there are better alternative available than Mcafee but if you want to use mcafee then first uninstall mcafee with the removal tool (mcpr.exe) and do a clean reinstall. Put your firewall in learning mode ( or what ever it is called for your firewall) if you are using any 3rd party firewall. Removal tool can be found here
How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe)

edit: Ok done some google search and interestingly lots of people have this problem and reported in various forum including mcafee forum and no thread seem to offer a specific in fact any solution. Clean reinstall doesnot seem to solve this some people tried this with no result and some even reported that after uninstallation they were not even able to run the installer due to " nevigation to the webpage was cancelled" problem. So i don't think you should go for a uninstall reinstall procedure. Only usefull info regarding this problem i have found is
with the navigation to the page cancelled:

open internet explorer>click on tools option (top bar)>choose internet options>navigate to the content tab>in the content advisor category make sure that it is disabled (you should see an enable button)

Link is here https://community.mcafee.com/thread/17706?decorator=print&displayFullThread=true
IMO it would be best if you report this problem in mcafee forum or better send a support request.

It would be very dangerous for you to just surf safely without an AV. Have you asked for a service request from mcafee? In the mean time you can use some other AV like MSE or Avast free untill you sort out the problem and if you dont want to change AV then use some light virtualization softwere like returnil for surfing etc.

Re your comment
so it looks like i'll have to be careful while surfing the internet

You have been provided with various ideas of what to do..

BTW > If your McAfee is "crippled" it is NOT a wise idea to use the internet without protection.
One needs to be ever aware even when one DOES have / use AV Software.
