I installed MS Security essentials to see if Defender would re-install to no avail. I still have no Windows Firewall or defender. Any other advice? I really don't want to blow away harddrive and re-install. Thanks!

Hi,

Is the McAfee software active or dormant as this will prevent the Windows stuff from activating.

The other information appears correct! Out of date

On saying that I do not use Firefox though.

McAfee Status

McAfee is running, but indicates that my computer is at risk because the firewall is off. Is there a better Antivirus to use than McAfee?

Hi, mdpoulin. Please see Error message 0x80070424 when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates.

As to the log, you have been neglecting your computer. IE9 was released months ago and included security enhancements.

Both Java and Adobe products have been major sources of infection. The current release of Java with the latest security updates is JRE 6u29 (JRE 6u30, released yesterday did not include security updates and Version 7 is the developer preview). Uninstall all previous versions and download the latest version from Java Downloads for All Operating Systems

Install the current version of Adobe products from Adobe (but UNcheck the option for the McAfee scan as it is unnecessary).

You are also advised to enable UAC. The seconds it takes to approve the UAC prompt can save a lot of grief down the road.
