4. Search for file like %PROGRAM_FILES%\ Trojan:win32/alureon.tk \ and delete it manually.
The ":" isn't a legal character in a Windows file name. If there's a filename with a ":", you can access and delete it with Linux (a boot CD or whatever)*. Also, the little "unlocker" program is very handy for deleting stubborn files.

*Linux can put (and delete, etc) files with ":" in the names on NTFS filesystems, but Windows will just give you errors if you try to access them.

I'm not worried about the OS here...and Ubuntu is good and all but I don't think I could get used to it.
If you take the time and learn Ubuntu (or any linux), then we won't need this 5 page thread on MBAM and Hitman. But Linux isn't for everyone - some people can't get used to it. But if you ask me, the only reason those people can't get used to it is because they don't have the patience to learn it. With patience you can learn anything.

This reminds me of my brother who isn't very computer literate by the way - he is willing to run bunch of anti-spyware/anti-virus suites with Windows Vista (ouch!) along with Deep Freeze - all in all to slow down his computer but he couldn't be bothered to learn Linux even though he does have time to learn (but simply lacks the patience). Oh and he never makes Backup because he is sort of an idiot.

Virus we cleared, wiped out 50 word documents+ Gdrive sync deleted web
Luckily she has a backup on her work PC. I think Google drive is a good idea. I think syncing is a bad idea. I figure the virus deleted the word docs, and gdrive synced the changes. Is that how it works? Delete local file, gdrive deletes off the web?

I've been scratching my head over the way Windows 7 backup handles incremental archives. To demonstrate: Setup a Win7 backup to archive c:\test Copy foo.txt to c:\test Run Win7 backup Browse the backup archive via the Restore Files GUI to confirm foo.txt was backed up. Now delete foo.txt
