Yes you can but depends if a site has malicious content or not.Sometimes the ads have malicious content and opening a page can give you one but you should be safe if your using a antivirus.Avast has stopped some websites from infecting my machine when i opened a web page and immediately stop me from viewing the site. Bottom line is browse safely and have some type of protection. Only visit websites you trust. Avoid sites with pornography or downloading websites because they are the websites that majority of time are malicious and prime targets. If you have to and I mean have to visit a site of that type of manner make sure it's trusted but have some type of protection for your computer while your browsing these types of sites.
Just to ad a bit to the above, along with a good anti-virus you want to have a couple anti-mail ware programs as well. Many people here use Malwarebytes & SuperAntiSpyware, these are both free. Also keep every thing updated including Windows
If your running Firefox, a good addition is NoScript, this will stop most of the fly-by viruses from d/l ing when you open the site.
