64-bit vs 32-bit System Susceptibility to Viruses or Malware?

Hope I'm not putting it in the wrong thread.

I've read some debates about the claim that 64-bit system is less susceptible to viruses and malwares. Some said it was true when most viruses and malwares are written and targeted at 32-bit system. But other said it's relatively simple for criminals to customize their attacks against 64-bit systems. I tried searching it in this Forums but haven't found one.
I'm not going to conclude anything, but having more knowledge about it could make me less curious. These are among my reading, Computerworld, and other

I have no real idea, but if I were to guess, I would say 64 bit systems would be more susceptible because it can run both 32bit and 64bit programs. Don't know if having one or the other really makes that much of a difference since viruses effect both computer types as well as ever

Unfortunately there isn't a straight answer. One of the great features of x64 is that encryption is far more accessible (on x86 platforms its slower, so theres a performance hit).

Prior to x64 becoming more mainstream, the bulk of malware was specifically written for the more common x86 platform. However, as x64 has become more common, malware/virus writers have been quick to adjust their code to infect both platforms by using the emulation feature Windows on Windows (x64 can run x86 programs). Many rootkits (the Sony music CD one for example) on the other hand are specifically coded for x86 and cannot run on a x64 platform since the Windows programmers specifically coded a prevention for this ever happening.

Malware writers are a deviant lot, and quick to adapt - you have to be on your guard all the time. I wouldn't have a lesser security setup just because its 64 bit.

If a burglar wants to break in to your house bad enough he will, either by deception or by brute force.
The same goes for your system, if your information is worth stealing then if someone who is good enough
wants it, they will more than likely know whether you are running a 32 or 64 bit OS before they even launch
an attack. There are various tools which run version detection and IMO, it doesn't come down to 32 or 64,
in the end it relates to which services and programs are not patched which makes your system vulnerable.

Err sure the 64bit version of Windows can run both...However, 32bit is restricted to user mode applications only. A real virus that does not have access to the kernel is useless. Only a 64bit virus can affect a 64bit kernel.

All replies given are able to provide me stronger bases in discussing the matter. As average users, friends and me have been trying to convince each others in different directions. But all I can assure to them that eliminating viruses or malwares threat isn't simply just put all the weight on the only security suites installed. Some of them even blindly installed more then one which in turn creating unexpected results. More, my other firm assurance to them is that always have certain manner and take precaution before jumping into something. Glad to be not in the wrong path.

Thousands of virus are created every day. Years ago when 64 bit was a small portion of the market it might of made a difference. The bad guys wanted to get the most bang for their time. Now days with the popularity of 64 bit systems they create 32 and 64 bit virus. To me whether to use 32 or 64 bit for security reasons is not even a question any more. Your personal use of the computer and security programs you use is the question.

Just some information that should help.
I use the built in Windows 7 firewall, MSE, Malwarebytes Anti Malware Pro, and Super Anti Spyware for my security and so far all is good.

I recently rely on MSE and W 7 native firewall. I will look into those two for additional programs.
