Bit of a dilemma with MSE

I have a customer of mine who is an aged farmer who lives out in the sticks.
The problem I'm having is that he lives in an area that has no broadband and no mobile internet access.
He recently purchased a new PC from me as he has to log his livestocks passports for travel purposes to and from the market. This has now moved to an on-line process hence the reason for him purchasing a PC.
So he has no choice but to use dial-up (which also disables his use of the only phone line he has)
The thing is windows updates are causing his internet connection to time out as the files are so large and this also causes his mail to seize up.
He uses MSE for security, and MS office for a simple excel spread sheet that needs to be updated and emailed. And he has to log on once a day to the internet to check a few things on his livestock sales etc.
Is there any way to disable windows updates for office and windows but allow MSE to update automatically or does he have to update MSE manually each day ? (remember the poor bugger struggles to turn the PC on and for the first month I was there daily to fill in the 10 or so lines into the spread sheet and mail them, but he seems to have got the hang of it now)
I don't mind bringing his PC to my office to do monthly windows/office updates, but I would prefer for his anti-virus to be daily updated automatically as 3 other Farmers in the same area have been infected recently via email so I just wanted to keep the costs down of me going out to him so often and keep him happy and show him that I can be of service.

    Thanks

    Nick

    G'day Nick,

I wonder if this might work?

Turn OFF ALL updates, but setup MSE as shown in the image below - setup a schedule scan each morning, and also check the option to run an update of the spyware definitions.

My understanding is that MSE will still update its defintions, as it runs separately from Windows Update.

    Regards,
    Golden

I have MSE setup to check for virus definitions every 4 hours in Task Scheduler. I believe you could set it up to check at whatever time you want in Task Scheduler.

Let me know if you want my Task Scheduler details...

Having been on 'dial-up' for 5 years (live in the boonies) the best thing to do, is update MSE manually when he dosen't need to use the computer immediately!
He can do these updates in the evening, or when he's doing his chores.

It also depends on the dialup ISP connection. I think I went through all of them to find one that wouldn't disconnect me when downloading updates.

David's Task scheduler tip would be the best way to go, it even suggests it in this page I found that has this MSE Update tool: MSE Update Utility [AddictiveTips Apps]

    Hi Nick.
About windows update for MS Office, I remember it was prompted on MS Office first run, I can choose not to change/update. And most likely windows won't include it on its update routines.

    Hope I'm not mistaken.

Using MSE scheduled scan would be the easiest option, but consider...
A missed MSE scheduled scan (and update) does not "run later" if the PC is not on at the scheduled time.
I don't know what it would do if it is on, but the network (dial-up) is not available.
Hopefully it would just end the task silently...

Task Scheduler does have these options:
"Start only if the following network connection is available"
"Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed"

I've never used the combination of options you might prefer to use in this case, and i don't have dial-up...

He needs a laptop, which he can run updates on when he's not at home and has access to a higher speed hotspot, and upon which he can run an online anti-virus scan such as NOD32 which is far better than MSE anyway.

I'd forget an onboard anti-virus completely. Slap all his archives onto a secondary partition from the OS, and use Windows Backup after every set of updates.

Gentlemen!, Ladies! let us try to remember the K.I.S.S method.

Are we helping PooMan or his neighbor? This is getting entirely too complicated.
