For real-time protection I also use MBAM Pro (paid), WinPatrol, SpywareBlaster, and Browser add-ons.

The best (or worst) protection is sitting in front of the keyboard.
+1 on that

I've used Avira for six or seven years, and can highly recommend it.

I run it in conjunction with the Windows firewall and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.

Small, fast, regular updates, easy to configure, and free.

And it WORKS!

What more could anyone want?

To protect yourself from the evils of the internet your basic protection should include

*Anti Virus Program
MSE is popular & is used by many people here & is free.
Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

*Anti Malware Program
Malwarebytes free.
Malwarebytes : Download free malware, virus and spyware tools to get your computer back in shape!

* SpywareBlaster free.
SpywareBlaster® | Prevent spyware and malware. Free download.

*Firewall
The inbuilt Windows Firewall is considered adequate.

*Router / firewall

It is important you update programs & scan regularly.
