    "CF" isn't a malware remover -
    such as "MBAM".....
Use it with care - under the direct, instructions of somebody who knows how to use it!

It shouldn't be used for day to day use, it's a specialised anti-rootkit and malware removal tool :) If you're infected and a trained analyst, such as Jacee, deems the use of Combofix appropriate for your infection then she would talk you through it's use. So many people run it thinking it will fix everything, that's not what it's designed for.

It's far from a registry cleaner and you should never run any form of registry cleaner/optimiser in the first place if you value your registry! The gains they promise are non existent and the software will destroy your registry eventually - I personally dealt with a thread here where a registry cleaner deleted 20,000+ keys belonging to Windows Update - not good!

Combofix is only hosted at BleepingComputer now. No one will stop you from running it yourself, but I would highly advise against it :) Combofix would have no problem whatsoever with deleting a core Windows file, it's a powerful tool and shouldn't be played with.

What exactly do you mean? How could it do anything other than ruin the OS install? I assume it would be safe to try it on a VM install of Windows.

Of course it would only ruin the operating system. This is an operating system board If most people's OS is hosed, their PC is a doorstop. A VM would be a good place to experiment, most people would not, hence the warning.

I still see a great number of people who seem to think it's OK because they have used it themselves, or know people who have effectively. But it can bite you at any time, and every system is vastly different. A Guy

Sometimes, you want to try and go into someones computer and try to retrieve files, "docs", pictures etc...
Before you might have to use the "R & R" on the machine.
"CF" is very good at requiring an "R & R"!
Have fun with it - it's just another, "toy"!
    Happy September! :)

rossfingal I have heard Combofix called a lot of things but never a toy.
If use wrong one would get a lot of practice doing clean installs.

I think if someone has sense enough to know how to use the power button, they are qualified to go ahead and run Combo Fix.

It will give us practice in helping them afterwards.
