Port Scanning attack detected on ESET

Hi All.

My colleague and I each have a windows 7 machine on a LAN. Now I have ESET NOD32 installed and it frequently shows me that his PC's internal IP address is scanning my ports - "Detected Port scanning attack from". Now I checked the log files in ESET and it says everytime that the port being scanned is port 139.

Is that malware/virus on my colleagues PC that is doing this? How can I prevent this and is it slowing down my internet in any way?

I'm not familiar with ESET, but it sounds as if your colleague has network discovery enabled and/or file and printer sharing enabled. This is not necessarily dangerous, nor should it slow down your internet connection.

Port 139 is used by NetBIOS.

Are you the administrator for this system, or is this a school/work/loaned system?

I ask because modifying any settings related to NetBIOS can cause major issues with printing, shared network storage and active directory.
