    Need An Opinion On Anti-Viral Software

    For years my family used Trend Micro and Webroot(together) on our computers. My father then bought a new computer, and got a free trial of Symantec and stuck with them. I bought a lap top and installed Webroot & Trend Micro BUT they both ended up being very resource heavy and would slow down my machine(which should not be so, and I have yet to find an answer to that little issue), so I installed AVG.

    Recently I have been having issues with AVG such as Windows telling me AVG is not active. This was just a circle of insanity because I would activate AVG, then AVG would tell me I don't have the right user rights to activate AVG and it would just be a cycle of this. I haven't worried about this much thought because AVG is expiring in about a month and I've been thinking about going back to Webroot & Trend Micro which has worked just fine on the other computers in the house. However I am worried that it will again bog down my system.

    I was also thinking if there really is a need for Webroot & AVG together installed on one computer. I know nowadays both AV programs cover alot of spectrum of internet security and I just wanted to know what everyone else's experiences was with these 3 pieces of software (AVG, Trend, Webroot).

    Thanks.

    It's never a good idea to run more than one anti-virus program concurrently. An appearance of a questionable file or attack may then be vied for control by both programs to deal with. One anti-virus program along with an on-demand scanner, and perhaps a virtual sandbox environment are more than sufficient for normal usage (firewalls assumed intact).

    VMPAS,
    I have had AVG AntiVirus Pro" {paid} on all computers here for years & see no reason to change.
    Have used Trend in the past but wasn't happy with it or the support offered.

    FYI...
    If your computer come preloaded with Anti Virus Software which you don't intend using, it IS advisable to remove it with the appropriate Uninstall tool BEFORE downloading another.
    {Remnants of the original may remain that can create inconvenient "glitches."}

    We generally recommend Microsoft Security Essentials & Malwarebytes as being appropriate with Win 7.

    If I'm not mistaken, you're talking about Webroot SecureAnywhere right? If so, then I would either run it alone or run it along side of some type of free AV such as Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira, or Avast. Webroot SecureAnywhere is designed to run along side another AV or by itself.

    I tend to agree with the opinion of JMH. MSE and MalwareBytes are both excellent and free. With MSE in place even MalwareBytes is really not necessary.

    However I don't personally use MSE. I use Avast! Free A-V and Comodo Free Firewall and there has never been a day's trouble. They are both excellent and if you look at the sticky threads in the Security Forum, only these two are listed. I have also the free MalwareBytes installed but I run it very infrequently.
