    Fake AV infection??

Hi! I was lead to this forum after googling my problem with this virus, which hid all my startup programs and destop icons... after looking at other threads and downloading malware and unhide I got my files to come back but like most people not the user file folders on my startup. Also, when I ran this korean virus protection program and malware I found six different types of viruses and the korean one supposedly fixed them but malware restarted my computer and afterwards gave me a popup saying coded error 2...
I still get the "system message: write fault error" popups as well as the data recovery popup that doesnt close.

Can somebody please help me? Im not that great when it comes to serious technical work which is why I couldnt really help myself with all the other threads! haha... Please and thanks!

    Welcome to Seven Forums, 13691369.

Why don't you use tried and trusted A-V Programs like Avast! Free or MSE instead of using programs that hardly anyone has heard about?

I have downloaded it! thank you so much it did a better job than malware! I somehow got rid of the popups with it but now I get a popup notification every second saying it has blocked a malicious url...; how do I completely get rid of it?
and I looked on this other site

[Solved] All programs missing from windows xp start menu - Windows-XP-General-Discussion - Windows-XP

and learned about smtmp, I found the folder and in folder 1 I found my programs but in folder 4 it is completely empty. I dont even have a folder 2... most of my saved files are apparently not completely there because it is slightly transparent.

can you help me out with this problem including the user files, startup icons? please and thanks so much!!

GFI Software formerly Sunbelt Software has two special malware removers one being the VIPRE Rescue Program and another new special Fakerean removal tool provided to me by their support lately.

Just lately I had to clean a fake Security Essentials scamware off of a 7 laptop. I still didn't find a blog with a screenshot of how this one looks but has a theme much like the Advanced SystemCare program. New Variant of "FAKE" Security Essentials to be aware of!

What did you download? If Avast! Free A-V then you may get frequent messages of blocking of malicious URLs, particularly if you frequent Warez, Porn and other dubious Sites. In the fullness of time these messages shall taper off to almost zero.

Google search reveals that Smtmp is the file extension used for folders that are created by the rogue Antispyware Software FakeHDD which offer the user help but actually infect the computer. I came to know of this extension for the first time today after reading your message.

I don't know to what extent your system is compromised by all the rogues that you have downloaded and installed. My suggestion to you would be to reformat your hard disk(s) and reinstall your OS all over again.

After that either protect yourself with Avast! Free A-V or MSE against viruses and malware and try to keep off the rogue sites. I don't know about MSE but if you install Avast it will fully help you in doing that.

    Good luck.

I simply went the Spring sale on the VIPRE Internet Security 2012 and called it a day! So far it has stood out from any others tried and includes an effective web filtering along with the firewall in that version.

You wouldn't see web filtering with the MS SE while the obvious detection improvement with the Windows Defender in the next version's Customer Preview has seen a much needed detection improvement there. Now to see what the Release Preview has to offer as far as MS security tools.

The GFI tools posted earlier will get Windows cleaned but not sweep the drive(s) entirely. For that a full malware removal program with an effective scan would be needed to sweep for any other traces.
