How to hide Ports 20/21/500 ?

    Hi All,

    Win7 starter, Acer netbook.

Shielddsup at GRC.com shows Ports 20/21 and 500 are visible to the internet.

    Should I worry?

How can I hide them like the rest of the ports?

I tried changing Firewalls from Private Firewall to Comodo, but still the same results.

    Thanks

Port 21 = ftp command port
Port 20 = ftp data port
    Port 500 =

Port 500 is used by the Internet key exchange (IKE) that occurs during the establishment of secure VPN tunnels. Users of VPN servers and clients may encounter this port.

Did you know that you can get answers to such questions in ShieldsUp?

Get rid of those 3rd party firewalls and use Windows Firewall.
Here is how to use Windows Firwall to block ports:

How kind, yes I did read that description on GCR but it means nothing to ME!

If I was that smart I would not be asking here.

I also rad there that 20/21 are FTP ports but again what does that mean or matter?

If I knew enough to make those decisions myself I would not be asking here.

Windows Firewall continues to get mediocre reports at best even though Security Essentials gets high marks so it is not a Microsoft hate thing, the firewall is obviously a weenie performer. It makes sense to this old fart, at least, to use the things that consistently get the best reviews. I have been wrong before, but I am pretty sure that is a good policy.

So a little more understanding of the plight of others who may not be so blessed with the knowledge of the technical aspects of this would go a long way. I am sure this will fall on your deaf ears, but a little humility and understanding makes for a nicer person.

    So, lemme try again.

    Should I be worried?

    How can I hide them?

    Thank you.

As Karl posted: Block a Port in Windows 7
    Try, recheck ShieldsUp! to verify.

Where do these people come from? They ask a question, get an answer and come back telling that's not an answer I was expecting so shut up and answer again.

Yes, you should be worried. Those open ports mean you PC is hijacked. Close them now!

Windows Firewall is good - in spite of what you may have read.

Fiddly to block outbound connections - so if you want to do that as well - try the free version of Windows7FirewallControl: Sphinx Software
